As part of The
Lutheran Center's
observance of
Women's History
Month in March, some
staff members of
Women of the ELCA
put together a
Stitching Niche in a
small meeting room
near the Women of
the ELCA offices. We
felt that since it's
part of Lutheran
women's history to
make quilts for
Lutheran World
Relief, it would be
fitting to do that
in The Lutheran
Center in Chicago.

We set up three
sewing machines
(lent by staff
members Terri
Lackey, Eva Yeo, and
Audrey Riley) and
supplied notions and
a few quilt kits.
Worna Haywood of the
ELCA Mission
Investment Fund
contributed a whole
bolt of fabric. The
quilt-makers of
Executive Director
Linda Post
Bushkofsky's
congregation, Our
Saviour in Arlington
Heights (Ill.), lent some
quilts in various
stages of
construction for
inspiration, and
also the video,
"Flying Quilts." And
Linda contributed a
quilt top and back.
In about two weeks,
sewing on lunch
hours and breaks,
stitchers from all
over the building
made six quilts.
Linda took them to
Our Saviour and the
quilters there
included them in
their shipment to
Lutheran World
Relief.
