Chilstrom Scholarship for Ordained Ministry
Essential Information

 
Purpose
The purpose of this scholarship is to provide assistance to Evangelical Lutheran Church in America women who are second-career students, during their final year at an ELCA seminary.
   
History
This scholarship was established in 1996 to honor the first bishop of the ELCA, Bishop Herbert W. Chilstrom and his wife, Corinne Chilstrom.
It was intentionally begun during the 25th anniversary year of the ordination of women in the Lutheran church.
The average award has been between $600 and $1,000.
   
Eligibility and guidelines
The applicant must:
be a citizen of the United States of America.
hold membership in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
have experienced an interruption in education of at least five years since college graduation.
be endorsed by the Synodical Candidacy Committee.
be preparing for the ordained ministry in the ELCA.
   
Additional Scholarship Committee considerations
Involvement of applicant in Women of the ELCA
   
Recipient commitment
1. Women of the ELCA must be notified in writing of any change in education plans.
2. Scholarship funds must be used within the academic year following the award.
3. Scholarship funds must be returned if the educational program is canceled, or if it is terminated by personal decision of the recipient.
4. If requested, recipient will be interviewed for an article in a Women of the ELCA publication or electronic media.
   
Please note
Maximum amount awarded to any recipient for this scholarship is $2,000.
Women of the ELCA reserves the right not to award scholarships in any given year.

Applications for the 2009–2010 school year will be accepted between December 15, 2008 and February 15, 2009.
