Women's Contributions to ELCA History

Archive photo, Women's Missionary Society, 1911In 1990, the then ELCA Commission for Women worked with the ELCA Archives to develop a photo exhibit titled "It Didn't All Begin with Ordination: Women's Contributions to ELCA History."

This exhibit has eight categories of photos depicting different aspects of women's involvement in the ELCA and predecessor church bodies:
1. Earliest Women's Organizations
2. Women's Organizations
3. First Women Missionaries
4. Women Missionaries
5. Deaconesses
6. Education
7. Home Missions and Administrations
8. Ordination of Women

You may view this exhibit online or borrow one of the two Women of the ELCA sets of this exhibit on a first-come-first-served basis. The photos are laminated and come in eight 11" by 14" manila envelopes. You may also borrow individual sections of the exhibit. Contact Laura Barkenquast at 800-638-3522, ext. 2737, or by e-mail if you would like to schedule a time to borrow one (or a section) of the sets.

You may want to consider using this exhibit in conjunction with your celebration of the Women of the ELCA 20th anniversary or in Women's History Month (March) in your congregation.  Add your own photos to your display to help your congregation know what Women of the ELCA is doing and has done.
