"Let the little
children come to me,
do not hinder them;
for it is to such as
these that the
kingdom of God
belongs." — Mark
10:14
This October marks
the 15th National
Observance of
Children's Sabbaths
event. This program
empowers
congregations in
their action and
advocacy for and with
children.
Participating
congregations take
one day this fall to:
-
Hold a worship
service that lifts up
the crises facing
children in America
and God's call to
people of faith to
nurture and protect
the poor and
vulnerable;
-
Have education
sessions that inform
persons about the
problems facing
children and how
faith can be put into
action to improve the
lives of poor
children and their
families;
-
Participate in a
service action that
directly meets the
needs of poor
children and their
families;
-
Are constant and
consistent in
speaking out for
justice for children.
The theme for this
year's celebration is
"Congregations Stand
for Healthy Children:
Bringing Hope and
Healing." The 2006
National Observance
of Children's
Sabbaths manual is
available and can be
ordered by calling
the Reverend Sally Jo
Snyder, national
coordinator of the
Children's Sabbaths
Program, at
202-662-3579 or
ssnyder@childrensdefense.org
In America, nearly 13
million children live
in poverty.
In America, 9 million
children lack health
insurance.
In America, we are
creating a "cradle to
prison pipeline"
where a Black boy
born in 2001 has a
one in three
chance of going to
prison.
Will you help change
the statistics?
