Advocacy

In our society and world, there are many whose voices are not heard. You can do something about that by your involvement in advocacy. (The word advocate means "to give voice to.")

Wondering what's needed? How do you become an advocate? Looking for resources? Many resources on advocacy, including a manual on starting an advocacy ministry in your congregation, are available on the ELCA's advocacy pages. Look there if you're just starting out.

If you're already committed to being an advocate, here are a number of advocacy opportunities that need your support.

Cover the Uninsured Week, April 23-29

Insurance:  Act today for America's uninsured. The State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), which now serves 6 million, comes up for reauthorization in Congress this year. See what you can do to renew SCHIP and help cover uninsured children.

Health initiativeHealth: A part of our health initiative, Raising Up Healthy Women and Girls, requires us to advocate for appropriate health care for women and girls. As a co-sponsor of the HEART for Women Act, Women of the ELCA invites you to help make the impact that can only happen if we put our voices together: Contact your U.S. Congresspersons to support this bi-partisan legislation today.

One spirit. One will. Zero poverty.Hunger: Join the annual Offering of Letters effort to help alleviate hunger. Your efforts, joined with those of thousands of other women and men, will go a long way to make a difference! Also, consider joining the ONE campaign by becoming a ONE Lutheran and making your congregation a ONE Lutheran congregation. You may also make a donation to the ELCA Hunger Program by sending your check through Women of the ELCA (the entire amount will be forwarded to alleviate hunger and we will know that women have joined the effort). Send your check payable to Women of the ELCA (indicate "World Hunger" on your check memo line) to Women of the ELCA, 8765 W. Higgins Rd., Chicago, IL 60631-4101.

Sexual exploitation: See what you can do to stop the commercial sexual exploitation of women and children.
