Constitutions

Changes in the constitutions voted into effect at the Ninth Triennial Convention (2014) fall into these categories:

  • The term “delegate” was replaced with “voting member” in every instance, in all four constitutions;
  • The eligibility for elected office was clarified in all four constitutions, requiring women to be “voting members of the ELCA” in order to serve in an elected capacity; and
  • The model constitution for synodical organizations was changed so that proposed annual budgets of synodical organizations must be submitted to the churchwide executive board within 30 days after adoption (rather than prior to adoption).

All changes became effective immediately, as provided for in our constitutions. Congregational and special units and synodical organizations need take no further action on these changes; they need only update their constitutions to reflect these changes.
