Fear on the streets of Chicago
In 2012, more Americans were murdered on the streets of Chicago (532) than in Afghanistan (305).
We’re only midway through the month of January and there have already been 25 homicides in the city of Chicago. This is crazy! Many people have left the city and moved to the suburbs where they feel it is safer. But moving out of the city is not the answer. What will it take to stop the violence?
Of the 25 murders that have occurred in Chicago this year, five were of school-aged children. In addition, another 16 children have been shot. This is causing parents to live in fear for the lives of their children. Some parents are opting to home school. Is home schooling the future of education?
Will the new gun control sanctions lead to a reduction in the number of deaths due to gun violence in major cities? I pray that it will. But I have my doubts. The latest gun control laws only address assault type weapons and not hand guns. Yet most homicides occur with handguns.
What do you think?

It’s not the guns, it’s the people that need to be worked on.
It will take everyone working together to stop the violence. Community action, public education, faith groups and various laws with background checks, documenting when guns are stolen, given or sold to others will begin to address this problem.
Where guns are present, the danger heightens.
I do not believe gun control will change things until we change the general attitude of our citizenry. It seems that everyone wants to blame others and not take responsibility for their actions or circumstances. We want the newest, the best and we want to be first. Don’t get in our way or we are justified at being offended and taking violent action. Video games exalt violence against anyone to get what you want. TV shows, music and movies glorify bad behavior and when someone speaks out or stands up to this attitude they are often left on their own.
Raeann,
I totally agree with you!
