Women
of the ELCA is the
women's ministry
organization and a
churchwide program
unit of the
Evangelical Lutheran
Church in America.
An estimated 500,000
women of all ages in
more than 7,500
congregations and
special units participate in Women
of the ELCA's local,
churchwide, and
global ministries of
faith development,
service, advocacy,
and leadership in
church and society.The
organization has
three legislative
expressions: local units, the
synodical
women's organization, and
the churchwide
women's organization. The
organization's
highest legislative
authority is the
Triennial
Convention. An
elected executive
board acts between
conventions. The
churchwide women's
organization staff
develops resources,
publications, and
programmatic
services that
support the
ministries of the
synodical and local
organizations.
The
synodical
organizations
(located in 64
geographic areas of
the U.S. and the
Caribbean) are the
primary support and
encouragement to the
local unit. The
synodical
organizations have
within them
conferences or
clusters that assist
as program arms of
the synodical
organization in this support to
local units. While
having no
legislative
authority, the 600
clusters or
conferences
throughout the
organization assist
in program delivery
and often serve a
liaison role between
the synodical
organization and
units.
The
local unit is the
"member"
of the organization.
An individual is
called a
"participant."
Each congregation or
institution can have
one unit; however,
each unit may have
an infinite number
of circles or study
groups, action
groups, and
fellowship groups.
Units may use or
adapt one of the
models for ministry
shared on this site
as their
organizational
model
or create their own
umbrella model that
encompasses the
ministries, goals,
and desires of the
women in the congregation(s) or
institution.
