Mission Areas

One mission: three interconnected mission areas.

The Women of the ELCA mission areas are constitutionally established in the organization's constitution. Look at the three mission areas — community, growth, and action — separately to see what is unique to each.

With each mission area there is a question to be pursued. As you plan your ministries, ask yourself if your ministries are responding to these three questions.

Venn diagram

Use the Venn diagram to help you. The Venn diagram is a tool that Women of the ELCA began using in 1998 to help illustrate the interconnectedness of the mission areas.

This diagram uses a prison ministry program as an example. The triangle-like shape in the middle of the Venn Diagram, where the three circles overlap, is the core of the ministry. Each mission area brings to each ministry the features and benefits of its perspective.

Imagine a question mark (?) in this center area. This is a ministry area yet to be discovered through intentional outreach. What ministry are you being called into? What ministry that currently exists do you need to look at again with the three mission areas in mind? A good ministry plan has intentional entry points worked into it. Provide opportunities for new people to get involved and for current participants to get involved in new ways.

Our mission: to mobilize women to act boldly on their faith in Jesus Christ
