Expect a miracle
The days of June are full of expectation and eager anticipation. Graduates think of all the possibilities before them as they begin new careers or advanced studies. Couples look toward the future supported by the love they share. Gardeners smile at the sprouting seeds and budding plants, almost tasting the ripe tomato or smelling the fragrant rose that is yet to come. Workers look forward to summer vacation days away from the routine of work, days filled with relaxation or adventure.

The thoughtful composer and mandolin player Peter Ostroushko wrote a song called "Miracle" that challenges our thinking about expectations. "Expect a miracle today. Open your heart to come what may," the first verse begins. "Open your ears and hear the sound. The message of hope is all around. Don’t let the stardust leave your eyes. Don’t let your hopes and dreams slip by. Hold to your faith, your soul will fly. Expect a miracle."

So this June I’m accepting Ostroushko’s challenge. I will expect a miracle. Why stop with just one? I’m going to expect lots of miracles, because our God is a God of miracles. But I won’t just expect those miracles, I’m going to pray for them and I’m going to work towards them.

I expect that the abuse of women and children will end. I expect that in the workplace and in the church women will stop undermining other women. I expect equal pay for equal work. I expect that no child will go hungry tonight. I expect that no animal will be mistreated. I expect that the raping of God’s creation will end.

These are a few of my miracle expectations today. What are you expecting?
