Grab some
yarn and
change the
world
If you are a
crafter, the
last thing
you may need
now is
another
project as
you finish up
Christmas
presents. But
crafters,
especially
Lutheran
crafters, are
most generous
with their
time and
creativity,
so read on
about two
projects that
can use your
support.
With a
January 2,
2007,
deadline,
Save the
Children and
Warm Up
America!
Foundation
have launched
Knitters and
Crocheters
for Newborns:
Caps to the
Capital. This
effort seeks
to raise
awareness
around
helping
babies in
developing
countries and
increasing
funding
critical
health
measures for
mothers and
children.
This "capital
idea" is
simple: knit
or crochet a
cap for a
newborn and
attach to it
a personal
note to
President
Bush urging
him to put
more money
toward health
programs for
mothers,
babies, and
children in
need. Send
your cap(s)
to Save the
Children by
January 2,
2007. Save
the Children
will take all
the caps and
notes to
Washington
for a visual
expression
that
Americans
want our
country to do
more to save
newborn lives
globally. The
caps will
then make
their way
around the
globe to
countries
served by
Save the
Children.

You have
until the end
of January
2007 to knit
or crochet
scarves for
the Red Scarf
Project. The
Orphan
Foundation of
America
supports
college
students who
have aged out
of the foster
care system
by sending
them care
packages.
Through OFA's
Red Scarf
Project
knitters make
red scarves
that are
added into
the Valentine
care packages
the students
receive.
(Crocheted
scarves are
welcome too.)
Scarves are
mailed during
the month of
January 2007
to OFA.
I made two
scarves for
the Red Scarf
Project last
year and
thoroughly
enjoyed
working in
red! Any
pattern can
be used.
P.S. I
promise to
devote some
Web time here
in the future
exploring
knitting as a
healing,
meditative
discipline.
